Former student and filmmaker, Zack Conkle, won an award for his documentary short, Wright’s Law . The documentary covers Jeffrey Wright teaching and at home. Wright, who has been teaching for 23 years, is one of those teachers that forever impacts their students. Conkle’s documentary captures how fun, entertaining, educational and moving Wright’s classes are.
Wright’s Law also captures the incredible love present in Wright’s home. The Wright’s have two kids, Abbie and Adam; Adam has Joubert Syndrome, an extremely rare genetic disorder that causes significant visual, balance, communication and movement impairments.
Every year, Mr. Wright talks to his students about his experience raising a child with special needs. He talks about the miracle of being able to sit in a chair. It is. And Wright explains it so well.
“I have a completely intelligent boy, but he can’t control what his body does, even though his body is completely functional. You know the fact that your butt’s on that chair, your brain tells your butt which way up is, his brain doesn’t do that. So the mere fact that you can sit down and sit up is a miracle.
He shares his life with the students to get them thinking about the big questions and is hopeful that he might inspire them to go into science and genetic research.
“There is something a lot greater than energy. There’s something a lot greater than entropy. What’s the greatest thing? Love.”
